ABCViky - Education Program

ABCViky is named to honor a local young woman from the community of Manglaralto, who passed away after a long battle with breast cancer.  Viky Triviño Bonilla was well-known educator and community leader who worked for the betterment of Manglaralto.  We hope to honor her memory with our plans to improve education for the local children in the area.

ABCViky has conducted several English class opportunities for children in the nearby towns of Montanita and Dos Mangas, as well as Manglaralto. We currently have English classes two days a week for all grade levels in the Manglaralto elementary school of Alfredo Sanz Rivera.  ABCViky has also supported various art endeavors in the community. We held a mosaic class for all ages and provided art kits for a cultural group that works with vulnerable children. ABCViky has “adopted” the staff at the elementary school and we supply yearly gifts bags of teachers essential to begin the year.

Through a private donor, we have worked with Alfredo Sanz Rivera elementary school for three years.  With the generosity of Ann Luther and Ron Jackson, all seven classrooms were completely renovated with ceramic flooring, paint, and windows.  Each teacher received a new desk and chair in the classroom as well.

Manglaralto Giving and ABCViky have recently started a wonderful connection with the Montanita Spanish School. This school program attracts tourists from all over the world. The tourists come to enjoy the beach, surf, learn Spanish, and volunteer in the community. ABCViky places some of these volunteers in the elementary classrooms to help with the English language, The volunteers can make a deeper connection with the children. The volunteers get to learn conversational Spanish while the children receive an international education as they get to know their volunteers and learn about their home country.

ABC Viky has awarded three scholarships to outstanding students in the area. After a process of collecting data about the soon-to-be graduates and conducting formal interviews with the top students, we chose a student to award a scholarship of $500. In 2022 we were able to award one scholarship to a young lady who is currently in dental school. In 2023 we were fortunate to award 2 $500 scholarships. Scholarships are not common in Ecuador. Even though the university is “free”, students must pay for books, technology, and room and board if they attend a university away from home.

ABCViky hopes to continue to grow our English program and award more scholarships as donated funds become available.
